Air Mohan

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

It took a custom designed boot fashioned with high end Pirelli rubber and a built-in air bladder to help Mohan the rhinoceros with his foot issues. Mohan, who turns 39 this month, is featured in a new book, “The Rhino with Glue-On Shoes: And Other Surprising True Stories of Zoo Vets and their Patients,” by Lucy H. Spelman and Ted Mashima.

Mohan, who currently resides in Florida, is consider to be one of the world’s oldest living rhinos. In 2003, he developed an abscess one of his feet that demanded medical attention. His keepers at the Miami Metrozoo commissioned tire maker Pirelli to fashion a boot, named the “Air Zohan” to protect the foot. Mohan became the first sneaker wearing rhino in the world, sporting the shoe for several weeks until he healed.

Watch German Fernandez of Riverbank, CA break the national high school record for 2 miles at the Nike Outdoor National meet in North Carolina.

The highly anticipated race took place this Saturday at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. German’s 8:34.4 breaks Jeff Nelson’s long standing, 29 year old mark of 8:36.3. Five Parks of NE Portland

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Tired of hard pavement, stop signs, and pesky automobiles? Check out five of the best parks in NE Portland. Click on each highlighted region for details about that particular park.

My personal favorite is Fernhill Park, located just north of Killingsworth St., between NE 37th and 42nd Avenues. The largest of the five parks, Fernhill includes a beautiful regulation track, a hilly northern section, tennis courts, a playground, and ample field space.
